The Soverel 26 has a super website, and there are also a couple of useful forums one on SailNet and the other on Yahoo!. Both are great for gathering information about the other Soverel designs. Below is a compiled list of the Soverel Designs If you are interested in a Soverel and would like an owner opinion, try Ask Another Opinion: http://old.cruisingworld.com/anothero.htm which for a nominal fee, you can get contact information of owners of different Soverels who are willing to discuss their boats. If there is any additional information that you need, or that can be added to this page please feel free to contact me. Thanks, Bill Heintz,

Soverel 26 Owners Association
web page: http://www.chesbay.net/soverel26owners/
e-mail:
The following is some information regarding the Soverel 27 which was prepared by Rudy at Windchaser Yachts.
Soverel 27 Rating Information
The Numbers:
LOA: 26'6", LWL: 22' BEAM: 8'9", DRAFT: 5', DISP: 3,900, BALLAST: 1,600, S/A: 362 sq.ft., Actual (measured) Displacement: 4,550 lbsHistory:
Mark Soverel designed the Soverel 27 during the early 80's to the then popular MORC Rule ~ Unfortunately due to the financial difficulties of Soverel Marine, the boat could not be built at that time. During the mid-eighties, Erickson Marine found some success in re-building Olson 911 & 25 designs acquired from the in receivership Olson (Pacific) Boat Works. As a result of this, rival Tartan Marine (of Ohio) acquired soon to be defunct Soverel Marine and began re-building the popular Soverel 33 sailboat. In 1986 with MORC still gaining popularity and strong sales of the Soverel 33, Tartan Marine decided to build the 27. The boat was designed and built totally to the MORC rule and featured a Yanmar I/B diesel engine and all the usual MORC quirks ~ heavy disp, rod rigging, check stays, open transom, etc, etc. Unfortunately from a production standpoint, all of the above made the Soverel 27 a very expensive boat to build, and obviously to sell. During 1987 it is alleged that roughly 27 Soverel 27's were built before Tartan decided to pull the plug on the entire Soverel product line.Rating Info:
Despite being relatively few in number ~ The majority of the Soverel's have done a fair amount of racing and migrated to several different PHRF regions thus there is fairly generous amount of comparative data available. The following information was obtained directly through current PHRF Databases that have Soverel 27's actively racing.
138 - Chesapeake Region - 2 boats (Plum Fun & Frosty Paws)
135 - Galveston Bay - 1 Boat
132 - Lake Erie - 1 boat
135 - Lake Michigan - 2 boats (Wildgoose & Boomerang)
138 - Clear Lake - 1 boat (Attitude)
138 - Detroit - 3 boats (Black Magic, Fire on Deck, Sly Fox)
138 - Eastern CT - 1 boat
141 - Long Island Sound - 2 boats ~ One had I/B removed and is ~6 sec
144 - So.Cal 1 boat
138 - West Florida 1 boat (Past Time)
- - - - Lake Minnetonka - 1 boat ~ Not Racing no rating available
16 Total Boats, 10 Total Active PHRF Regions
Other regions were found with rating data for the Soverel 27 however these were the only regions with active Soverel 27's listed in the membership database roster.
Based on the above information the rating range varies from a low of 132 to a high of 144.
A specific breakdown as follows ~ PHRF Regions at:
132 (1) - 1 Soverel 27 racing at this rating
135 (2) - 3 Soverel 27's racing at this rating
138 (5) - 8 Soverel 27's racing at this rating
141 (1) - 2 Soverel 27's racing at this rating
144 (1) - 1 Soverel 27 racing at this ratingWith the BC Sailing/PHRF NW 10 % these numbers work out to the following: 132 + 10% (13.2) = 145.2 135 + 10% (13.5) = 148.5 138 + 10% (151.8) 141 + 10% (14.1) = 155.1 144 + 10% (14.4) = 158.4
Other information:
This boat has a double spreader fractional rig, Yanmar I/B diesel engine with folding prop., elliptical keel and inboard rudder, Construction of both hull and deck is Balsa cored. Full interior ~ complete fiberglass liner with full v-berth and aft berth to sleep four, sink, tanks, 12 V electrical, etc, etc. The above information was carefully obtained from actual current PHRF member rosters from various regions in North America ~ The above information was compiled for informational purposes to assist in determining a fair an equitable rating for this vessel. [data collected 2002]
I have recently purchased what I believe may be the first Soverel 28 and am interested in starting some sort of history. In the back of a pamphlet on the boat was a scribble about it being in the 1964 boat show in New York but I have come to a dead end on the information superhighways as far as Soverel is concerned. Any pertinent information or even a nudge in the right direction would be greatly appreciated . . . Thank you for any help - Eric Smack, EricJamesSmack@msn.com@msn.com [posted 11/2002]

10 page Acrobat PDF of the Soverel 36
It is believed that there were only 14 of the Mark Soverel 36's made: this figure does not include the earlier Bill Soverel 36' boats which included a Yawl model. Hull numbers 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 are Shoal Draft / Centerboard Sloops and hulls 1, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 are Fixed Keel, Deep Draft Racing Sloops.
Hull #1: The original fixed keel Mark Soverel designed 36 was named Moody Blue, her construction was completed in 1975.
Hull #2: Arcturus, built with a solid glass hull, she was the only Soverel built on spec boat built prior to the Soverel 26's.
Hull #3: built with a solid glass hull - originally red hull
Hull #4: Rubaiyat at City Island, New York - built with an Airex core and different glass lamination schedule.
Hull #9: Originally made for Bill Soverel and named Flying Tiger. She was later sold Mark A. Richter on December 16, 1986. Richter liked to refer to her, lovingly, as Tigger, although the name was never officially changed, she is now named Marita.
Hull #10: On September 9, 2006, OPTION won the Spirit Rider Regatta on the Atlantic Ocean.
OPTION took first and Soverel 33s took second and third.Hull #11: Was the second Flying Tiger Mark Soverel 36
Foxtrot at Deerfield Beach, Florida is For Sale [as of 2-27-06]

According to Dave, if you've never sailed on a Soverel 36 you will find that it is quite different than the 33. [posted 3/2006]
There is a simple method for determining the hull number, showing its sequence in production, of a Soverel 36. All Soverel 36 hull identification numbers (HIN) start with SVM 360. The two numbers following SVM360 __ __ are the numbers that designate that particular Soverel's hull sequence number. In the instance of Rubaiyat it is 04 and in the instance of OPTION it is 10, i.e., SVM 36004... and SVM 36010... Decoding HIN's
