Soverels compete in the 2003 Chicago Verve Cup Regatta in Chicago.
3^rd Assassin, San Sansome, 6^th Rampage, Bill Richardson,

The Verve Cup is a far smaller regatta (around 200 boats) than the Chicago NOOD (around 300 boats) and is run largely within PHRF sections. Unfortunately Nemesis has had some misfortune with it's rigging and the new owner has been rather busy so did not manage to get it fixed in time. Zot I believe had conflicting plans so also didn't make it, leaving just Assassin and Rampage representing the class.

The weather was light on Friday and Saturday (less than 10 knots) and then picked up to a fairly solid 12-15 knots on Sunday. Ideal light conditions for most of the fleet were it not for the significant powerboat chop caused by Chicago's Air & Water Show, taking place 3 miles further inshore, and making it very very awkward to sail fast for the first two days.

An interesting PHRF 7 Section included a Melges 24, an Olson 30, an Andrews 30, a Beneteau Solo 30, 2 Soverel 33s (one Soverel built Rampage one Tartan built Assassin), an Express 34, a Gorman Express 35, a New York 36, a Hunter 37 and a Farr 38.

I am pleased to report that despite having some extremely good light air boats in the section the Soverels were the only boats to take a first place (one each) from the extremely light and zippy Melges 24 (who picked up the remaining three first places and won the section comfortably).

After a light love-tap we nearly had the New York 36 DSQ'd from the first race on Sunday which would have given us a 2nd in the regatta and Jack-a-Roe the Olson 30 a 3rd, but our protest was rejected because none of the crew of the New York 36 heard us say the immortal word "Protest" during the collision (for which the race committee found both boats at fault!!) Final positions, with boat make and PHRF rating were

Soverels take home silver at 2003 Put-in-Bay Regatta, Put-In-Bay YC, OH

There were three Soverels at the I-LYA Race Week this year, Moisture Missile, Thriller and us on Foghorn.  Due to unfortunate circumstances we all ended up in different classes.  Moisture Missile was in PHRF B with a rating of 84.  Because of the splits, Thriller was in PHRF C with a rating of 87.  Foghorn ended up racing in JAM because of a shortage of crew for the regatta.

Weimer IV, Arlene Steuer, also raced over to Put-in-Bay in the Deepwater Race from Cleveland on Friday night before the regatta but was apparently unable to stay for the actual regatta.

The regatta ended up as a fairly light air affair with two around-the-islands races sailed (on Monday and Wednesday) and a windward-leeward on Tuesday.  A second windward-leeward scheduled for Tuesday was cancelled due to very light conditions.

Moisture Missile ended up with a 3rd for the regatta in PHRF B with a 5th, a 4th and a 1st in the individual races.  They were beaten by two J-33's.

Thriller ended up with a 3rd for the regatta in PHRF C with a 2nd, a 4th, and a 2nd.  They were beaten by an Evelyn 32 and a Hobie 33.

On Foghorn we were fortunate to win 1st in JAM both in Class and Overall with three overall 1st's for the races. Kent Gardam

• Outrageous wins Lake Norman Yacht Club - July 4th Regatta - We had good breezes both days, Saturday and Sunday. Two Windward Leeward Races were run, one Saturday and one Sunday We had a lot of fun with four Soverels, Saturdays race had three Soverel finishing with in 11 sec. R. J.

June 14-29

• Photo from the VanIsle360 website (www.vanisle360.nisa.com), which describes the 2003 Van Isle 360 race.  Lottie Dottie Dee, Wendel Gregory's hull #6 is shown in a number of pictures from the site.   Wendel finished a very respectable 9th of 17 in a class that went all the way up to Santa Cruz 52s rating negative 10.

• The race itself was an absolute blast.  It was 10 separate point to point races (legs) totaling 580 miles, and circumnavigated Vancouver Island in British Columbia Canada; it was absolutely spectacular.  The mountains were breath-taking, the very rugged coastline was pretty much uninhabited, and there were bald eagles everywhere  When we were at the NW tip of the island we were far enough north and west in the time zone that it didn't get dark until 11pm.  An absolutely great experience. • Two Soverel 33's competed in the the Storm Trysail 2003 Block Island Race Week. 4^th Deviation, Iris Vogel, 5^th Slàinte, Mark McCarthy. It was great weather with really good compition. Robin Ricca & Todd Aven from Phoenix, SVM #70, sailed on Deviation.

7-8 June 2003

• Black & Blue Wins the Mayor's Cup Yacht Race in Stamford - Black & Blue, a Soverel 33 sloop owned and raced by David Schmidt of Darien, won the 18th annual race for the City of Stamford Mayor's Cup Sunday, June 8 on Long Island Sound, defeating 41 other yachts entered in the event. Black & Blue won the race by only 28 seconds over a 9.8 nautical mile course south of Shippan Point. The race was started in southeasterly winds of about 8-10 knots and 1-foot seas, with the wind later becoming light and variable, and finally, non-existant. • Three Soverel 33's competed in the the EBYRA 2003 City Island Cup. 1^st Deviation, Iris Vogel, 3^rd Pheonix, Robin Ricca, 8^th Adrenaline, Pat Croke. This was the first regatta for Pheonix after a long Winter 2003 retrofit. Adrenaline had the speed, but did not have the advantage of local knowledge for the tricky Eastchester Bay winds and currents.

• Two Soverel 33's in Duck Island Yacht Club ECSA Spring Regatta. 2^nd Slàinte, Mark McCarthy, 6^th Paladin, Dennis Carriere. Not bad for a crummy Saturday. Got two races in, did not really start pouring until the end of the second. Had great side by side with Paladin, who is really coming up to speed, when they work out their crew issues, watch out. M. • Tom Gilbert on Grafix appears to have had an excellent 2003 Swiftsure International Yacht Race (Swiftsure Lightship Classic).  Graffix won their 10-boat class (Class 1, Division H.)  The results indicated that it was a pretty breezy race. A. J.

• Stalker wins 2003 Tall Ships Trophy for the Mug Race for being first to finish in the "North Course Race".   The Soverel 33 mast is too tall for the "real" Mug Race that goes under Shands Bridge at Green Cove Springs.  Team Stalker was treated as celebrities because Al Holt was winner of the 1st Mug Race (this was the 50th).

• Santana wins the 2003 Gulfstream Regatta in Ft. Lauderdale. see http://www.gulfstreamsailingclub.org/regatta/index.html
  They placed first in PHRF 1 and won the MIASF CUP (Marine Industry of South Florida) for the lowest combined time in PHRF. Saturday's conditions were awesome. The course was a 26 mile distance race that ran along the coast between Port Everglades and Hillsboro Inlet SeaBuoy. The breeze was up and we blasted down the coast on the final leg surfing at 13kts. Sunday offered two windward/leeward races with very light and shifty conditions in the second race finishing in a building sea breeze.

22 August 2002

• Assassin, Robert "Sam" Sansome, walks away with 2002 Chicago Verve Cup.

  
  Day 1 - A highly competitive day of racing in 10 - 15 knots and a light swell.
  We took two bullets beating our nearest competition (a well sailed NY36) by 14 and 25 seconds.

  Day 2 - A HEAVY weather day. 20 - 35 knots and quite a chop.
  Race 1 - On the first upwind leg of the first race of Day 2 we were caught in a tacking dual with the NY36 when it blew one of it's intermediate shrouds and had to retire from the day's racing. After blowing an old 1/2 oz spinnaker on the first downwind leg we believed we had the race won and did not hoist a chute in the 2nd downwind leg, unfortunately after taking the bullet we were corrected over by less than 5 seconds by 2 boats so came away with a 3rd. (Next time we won't be so conservative!!)
  Race 2 - Unfortunately the second race of the day was abandoned after we had completed 75% of the 2nd upwind leg when the race committee chase boats could not reset the windward mark (one of the boats was sinking and the other caught the mark's line in it's prop!!) - too bad because we were half a leg ahead of the rest of the section and this would have wrapped up the regatta for us.

Day 3 - Light wind racing in 7 - 12 knots and a light swell.
Only one race was held and knowing that only one boat (an Olson 30) could beat us we covered them and the majority of the fleet. The NY36 was back after "borrowing" an intermediate shroud from a non-racing sister ship (big hand for their effort here). Anyway after slamming out the NY36 at the committee boat on the start we let them have the favored right side of the course while we kept our eye on the Olson and the rest of the fleet. We took a comfortable 2nd place behind the NY36 and so took the honors for the regatta.
