Report

Despite the ominous predictions in the forecast, we ended up having a great weekend of sailing.

Everyone on Friday night arrived without a hitch, although some were cursing the S33 'iron mizzen' regarding the slow speeds that it delivered at. We had plenty of free open slips for everyone as our club has a cruising contingent who were away on our annual cruise.

Saturday morning noon start gave everyone ample time to get setup and out onto the race course. The first gun was delayed for an hour or so, due to no wind. Slàinte decided to throw a hook at Duck Island, Phoenix was about to join them in a raft up, when the sun disappeared and cloud cover brought a ESE 5-8 kts of breeze, figures. Tom Carse, our PRO at DIYC, promptly got in 3 races. Results were mixed with Whacko winning the first race, then Slàinte, and finally Paladin winning the last race. Deviation was the big winner for the day with three 2nd's, very consistently sailed. Overall, racing was shifty, with everyone feeling out the other in close competition.

Saturday night's party featured more appetizers than your could eat. As promised, a Keg of Fosters (Kappa Donate), Goslings Rum (Good Spirits Shoppe), Cherry Stone Clams (Bills Seafood), Shrimp, Buffalo Tenders, Artichoke Dip (McCarthy family recipe), Mexican Dip and a few others, were all big hits. For diner we ate Chicken, Dogs and Burgers, with Potato Salad, Macaroni Salad, and Clam Chowder. For desert, oh ya, cream puffs in chocolate sauce. Don't think I heard anyone complain about not eating enough.

Sunday morning, 10am start, I was late leaving 9:15am, only followed by the Adrenaline gang, it was a race to see who would be last out. Patrick would have beat me, had torrential downpours not hit us. These only lasted for about 20 minutes, a great cure for a hangover, or any cobwebs you might have had. RC started on time, 10am, and proceeded to bang off 3 races. We sailed great windward leeward, once around courses. Got plenty of great starts in, had a nice SW 5-10, which died around noon, and came back with a vengeance at 1:30. It then built, we got 2 more races in, saw SW around 10-11kts at the end of the second. Deviation ripped her jib on the first race of the day, first windward beat, then Paladin lent them their spare, good on'em! Whacko rallied and ended up with 3 bullets and two 2nd's to win the regatta, after being fourth after the first day. Paladin and Slàinte duked it out for 2nd place, ended up tied in points, with Slàinte winning the tie breaker. Phoenix and Adrenaline, our rising new members to the class, certainly both had moments of brilliance, look out for them in coming events! Deviation showed great speed and tactics, however, had an unfortunate setback, and look for them as a serious contender at the nationals.

Results were done in the shade of the club house, with leftovers served, we kicked the keg, finished the left overs, and had tones of great giveaways. Glassware( DIYC), winch handles/blocks/keychaines/t-shirts(Lewmar), 1hr free sail repair/T-Shirts (Kappa), Dirty Dog Sunglasses (Clinton Eye Associates) and Coffee Mugs (S33 Class) were among the prizes, results are on the website. Special awards to Ray Vogel (Youngest Sailor), Adrenaline (Anchor Award), Deviation (Most languages spoke), and Paladin (Corinthian Award).

All in all, I wanted to take a minute and thank each one for coming, this event would not have been possible without your early commitments, and dedication to coming to this event. Also wanted to thank all of our sponsors, this event would not have been possible without them. While we lost 2Thirsty, we gained two more competitors for this event, and expect to entice more of you to come next year. It was a great tune up for the nationals for all involved.

See http://www.soverel33.com/Articles/Content/LoosRRTGauge.html for explanation on the Shroud Tension numbers.

Rake/Headstay length was taken from halyard hoisted (w/ attached tape) to the top of the boom fitting (square pivot fitting) [gooseneck] or at the upper edge of the black band, for all boats the deck to "black band" was 3'5". The halyard was then swung out to the headstay (which is is tensioned). Measurement was taken from the halyard down to the Stainless Steel bow fitting intersection of the bow and deck plates.
