Report

This regatta was the perfect opportunity to tune-up, practice boat handling, meet other Soverel sailors and to discuss and see how their boats are rigged. The post race parties were exceptional: the casual atmosphere and warm hospitality only serves to make Duck Island a super venue for future Soverel events.

Prior to the Skippers Meeting on Saturday morning, Fleet 1 Captain, Mark McCarthy went around to each boat to welcome all the competitors and take rig measurements to see how all the boats compared. (SeeSetup - Rig Measurements)

Saturday's racing was held south west of Duck Island with a 10-12 kt SW wind. The race was started without delay and 4 mi. two lap W/L course was set. On the first leg Slàinte, in a port-starboard crossing with Deviation, misjudged the crossing and in the process also fouled Paladin, freeing up 2-Thirsty to extend their lead to the weather mark. [ Slàinte did 1440 deg. turn in the process. ] By the second weather leg the wind had begun to diminish and the current started flowing in a west to east direction. The weather mark being set just south of Kelsey Pt Breakwater added a bit of excitement to the mark rounding because of the rip currents at the end. The Race Committee shortened the course at the leeward mark and 2-Thirsty finished within a few minutes of the 120 min. time limit, all but Adrenaline were able to finish within the 30 min. extension.

The racing on Sunday was moved inshore to Duck Island Roads, to minimize the effects of current and for stronger breeze. Six 1.5 mi. one lap W/L races were held. The racing was tight, and although in 4 out of 6 races Deviation rounded the top mark in the lead, both 2-Thirsty and Slàinte were close enough to break into the lead within minutes of rounding, with Paladin and Adrenaline on their heels. Adrenaline borrowed a Class length (14') pole and spinnaker on Sunday.

Outstanding Achievement Awards:

Worst Call - Brian Mclaughlin - Slàinte
Biggest Drunks - Adrenaline
Longest Travel - Deviation
Scared the RC the Most - Paladin

Rake/Headstay length was taken from halyard hoisted (w/ attached tape) to the top of the boom fitting (square pivot fitting) [gooseneck] or at the upper edge of the black band. The halyard was then swung out to the headstay (which is is tensioned). Measurement was taken from the halyard down to the Stainless Steel bow fitting intersection of the bow and deck plates.
