Soverel 33 Class Association
Official Class Rules
Article I. - Name
The name of the organization shall be the Soverel 33 Class Association
Article II. - Objective
The objective of the Class Association shall be to promote the development of the S-33 as a high performance sailboat and one-design racing class. It is recognized that the success of the class is dependent on the competitiveness of the S-33 in both handicap and one-design racing. It is the intent of these class rules to support the above concepts and to provide a structure for One-Design competition which will in turn enhance the success of the handicap racing. These class rules may be changed from time to time to allow for the healthy development and growth of this class.
Article III. - Administration
The Soverel 33 Class Association shall be a nonprofit organization governed by an executive board composed of a President, a Secretary and a Treasurer. It is the duty of this executive board to administer these Class Rules. The executive board shall be elected at an annual meeting and carry two year terms. It is the responsibility of the President to schedule and preside over the annual meeting. It is the duty of the Secretary to publish a class newsletter, which may be electronic in form, and which will contain the minutes of the annual meeting. It is the responsibility of the treasurer to post the financial standing of the organization in the annual class newsletter. A simple majority on executive board votes shall decide issues. A Quorum is all three positions except in the case when one of the positions is vacant in which case two shall be considered a quorum. Votes of the executive board shall be recorded in the annual class newsletter by the class secretary. Members of the executive board shall not be held liable for votes conducted by the board as part of their official duties. The organization shall be subject to independent financial audit if a majority of the membership votes for it.
Article IV. - Membership
Membership is open to owners of Soverel 33s, including owners in partnership. One vote per boat shall be allowed at the annual meeting. Membership dues shall be set by vote of the members at the annual meeting.
Each member must be current in all dues the class association may require in order to be considered a "member in good standing". Only members in good standing are allowed to vote.
Article V. - Amendments
These class rules may be modified by a majority vote of the members or a two-thirds vote of the executive committee. If the executive committee decides that a proposed amendment can not wait for the annual meeting it may poll the membership for its vote on the matter. Proxies are not allowed.
Article VI. - Hull
The Soverel 33 shall be built to existing specifications as sanctioned by the association.
No major changes may be made to the form or structure of the hull, keel or rudder. In Hulls prior to 1985 the stock rudder was rectangular and subsequently elliptical in shape. The rudder may be either of these two shapes.
It is the intent of this rule to allow for repairs and minor fairing and sanding of the hull, keel and rudder which do not alter the overall shape or weight distribution of the hull, or the weight, profile or sectional shape of the keel and rudder. The class association shall maintain templates or offsets to unambiguously describe both the profiles and sections of both foils. It is the responsibility of the secretary to maintain measurement management records for the class.
Article VII. -Deck
The deck hardware layout may be modified. The deck structure itself must remain intact "as molded" by the manufacturer. Adjusting location of the partners in the deck is allowed provided sail sizes are adhered to.
Article VIII. - Interior
The molded interior plan may not be removed. Removal of bulkheads or other structural supports are prohibited. The addition of bulkheads, stiffening, heads, holding tanks and other "permanent" interior fixtures is allowed provided that they remain additions and do not cause the removal of existing structure.
The adjustable mast step shall not be moved beyond the range of the transverse beam supporting the step.
Cushions and stove are optional.
Article IX. - Spars
Spars shall be built according to the design plans. The class standard is a 15/16th fractional aluminum rig with two sets of spreaders. Substitution of masts of different materials and design is not allowed. The standing and running rigging shall be as per design. The headstay length may vary but shall not be changed during a class sanctioned race. The purchase system of the backstay and running checkstays is optional. Checkstays are class standard and must attach at ?? feet from the deck. Spinnaker poles may not exceed the class length but may be made of materials of the owner's choosing.
Article X. - Prohibitions
1. Coring, drilling out , or grinding in any way to reduce the weight or to change the designed shape.
2. Reshaping the hull profile or contours.
3. True running backstays to the hounds are prohibited
Article XI. - Safety and Required equipment
1. Compliance with USCG and ORC equipment for a vessel of her size and use.
Article XII. - Sails
There are no restrictions on cloth material for sails and owners are free to use designs of any sailmaker provided they meet size and quantity limitations as this section dictates. The following maximum dimension sails are allowed for One-Design Class racing:

Article XIII. - Equalization
Every effort should be made to promote the true One-Design concept of the Soverel 33. Concerning the equality of boats with inboard engines Vs boats without such inboards. To promote the one design concept, boats without inboard engines will carry a 6 sec per mile handicap to allow for drag differential.
Boats from different builders have weight inequities based on construction techniques and interior options. Since the weight differential is on the interior mold. The intention is to equalize weights by adding removable weights to lighter boats interiors during class sponsored events. A weight certificate shall be obtained by each owner. Lead will be added by the owner to bring each boat to ?? lbs.
Article XIII. - Crew Limitations
The number of crew is not limited however the weight of all crew aboard during class sanctioned regattas is limited to 1620 pounds.
